The reptile has a stout body, light brown to gray crossbands, alternating with dark brown to reddish-brown crossbands. There are dark bands on the sides of the body. Sometimes these reptiels have overall pinkish tint; the head is covered with large plate-like scales.

One of the species is the Southern copperhead that is also called the Highland Moccasin, and Chunkhead The scientific name of this reptile is Agkistrodon contortrix contortrix.
