They are about 36-72 inches in length and are usually grayish in color. What is peculiar of them is that they have grayish-black blotches and two dark stripes underside of the tail. They feed on rodents, lizards, birds, and bird eggs.

This species (the scientific name - Elaphe obsoleta spiloides) is not dangerous and usually inhabits the area from eastern Georgia west to Alabama and north to southern Indiana. They prefer to live in pinelands, hardwood hammocks, cypress strands, swamps, marshes, etc. Gray rat snake can be bought from several farms and breeders.
