The Terrapin (or the Diamondback Terrapin) is a species of turtle inhabiting coastal swamps of the eastern and southern United States. This turtle is named for the diamond pattern on its shell. All Diamondback Terrapins have a unique pattern of wiggly, black markings or spots on their body and head. In the 19th century, these turtles were excessively hunted for food.
