These tortoises are divided into Western Herman Tortoises (Testudo hermanni hermanni) and Eastern Herman Tortoises (Testudo hermani boetgeri.) The former can be found in Spain, Southern France and Northwest Italy, and the latter in Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece and Italy. Western Herman Tortoises feature brighter and more vivid color patterns than their Eastern counterparts. These tortoises can tolerate cool weather.
