They are characterized by a series of orange blotches bordered in black. The ground color can be red, brown or gray. The ventral coloration is typically white. Hatchling reptiles may not display the coloration of an adult. They will acquire their usual pigmentation when they are about one year old.

These reptiles are excellent exotic pets and strikingly beautiful to look at. Naturally, they occur over the territory of the eastern United States. There is a theory that the reptile got its name from the checkered ventral pattern that resembles maize. The average life span of this reptile is around 10 years.
